This collection of stories by Mary Gaitskill includes "Secretary", on which the 2002 film
was based. The storylines revolve around personal relationships and the way in which those relationships
are mutated by distant memories and imagined fantasies. Take, for example, "A Romantic Weekend."
Beth and an un-named man meet at a party and are immediately attracted to each other. They plan to
spend the following weekend together for some hot bondage and discipline, but the reality of the weekend
that follows hardly matches up to the visions they each had hoped for.

This second video in the Basic Master Series introduces bondage safety, bondage devices to
use and not use, and basic bondage positions to the BDSM newcomer. The content is decent but the
production is simplistic; the camera is always still while objects and a submissive are placed in front of it.
During the segment on bondage positions, some of the ropework occurs at the very edge of the screen and
it's often hard to hear what the dominant/narrator is saying. Still, if you're new to BDSM, you may find
this video informative.

The title is indicative--the key word being "art". As anyone should know, learning to use a
single-tail is something that takes plenty of practice; watching a video can only whet your appetite. This
video acknowledges that fact by balancing 25% instructional tutorial with 75% good old-fashioned
dungeon scene play. The scenes are hot, demonstrating flogger warm-up followed by the caress of the
bullwhip. Two of the scenes show a male top and female bottom; in the third scene both the top and
bottom are female. So, while single-tail aficionados will appreciate Robert Dante's sage instruction on
techniques, a wider audience will appreciate this video.

	<volumetype>sexual scenarios (play scenes)</volumetype>

The book is divided into four sections. Each section is divided into two parts; the first part
being a narrative scene (really a short story) that might occur at a play party or person's home, and the
second part being a non-fictional explanation of flogging dynamics, techniques, implements, and so-forth
that uses the preceding scene as a jumping-off point for discussion.

The first two scenes present flogging successes, and the examinations that follow discourse about
networking to find the right partner; negotiating a scene; setting up a scene with appropriate furniture,
clothing, and restraints; types of floggers and their attributes; flogging techniques such as the "figure-8"
and "wet-towel" strokes; reading signals from a bottom; and the "story" a scene tells from warm-up
through to crescendo and denouement.

The third scene presents a scene that goes wrong, and then the following explanation expounds on all the
various ways a scene can go wrong, and of course, how to avoid these situations.

The last scene could only be described as a "flogger-cleaning" scene. Logically, the discussion that
follows centers on techniques and materials for cleaning floggers.

This collection of scholarly research articles begins with earlier studies by such authors as
Richard von Krafft-Ebing and Sigmund Freud who viewed sadomasochistic practices from a
psychoanalytical perspective. The bulk of the book consists of later works by such notables as G.W. Levi
Kamel, Thomas S. Weinberg, Charles Moser, and Pat Califia, who view SM from a more modern
sociological perspective. Of note is the one illustrated page in the book which identifies with
accompanying drawings the main forms of genital piercings.

This is the second edition, which is "revised, expanded, and updated" from the first edition
which was published in 1993 by Masquerade Press. In this second edition, Califia adds play scenarios
with gay, bisexual, and transgendered characters as well as a chapter on edge play.

My guess is that the first edition was the first general comprehensive introduction to "modern" pansexual
BDSM (albeit the term BDSM had not yet been coined). It predates "Screw the Roses"; earlier works
pandered to gay men. Califia smoothly covers the basics -- tops and bottoms, bondage, pain as pleasure,
role-playing, safety, communication and negotiation, fisting, contracts -- intersprinkling the discourse
with erotic vignettes. Additionally, the book includes a comprehensive glossary and an extensive list of
resources.

FifthAngel is a sadist, and by that he means that he becomes sexually aroused by inflicting
pain on a consenting individual. The pain must be true, and not pleasurable in any way. FifthAngel's
hope is to inform the BDSM community about what it means to be a sadist, and to this end his own
writing is joined by that of other sadists and by that of those who are on the receiving end of the pain.
